Queens Court, Berwick

A clever combination of gentle curves and bold colour has turned a difficult site with limited space into a quirky montage of vibrant foliage, form and colour. With a steeply sloping front yard, a string of Lemon Scented Gums soaking up any available moisture, street frontage on two sides and a back garden less than 3.5m wide, there were definitely some challenges involved. Bright planting, funky paving, clever use of colour and functional, yet beautiful, hardscape elements bring the garden space to life.

Espaliered Tangelos, cheery Dahlias, fragrant roses, bold succulents, tasty herbs and a calming strip of feature Maples create a bright, useful planting with year round interest. Two water features, two outdoor entertaining areas and a planting palette to impress any horticulturalist; this tiny garden has it all, without compromising valuable space. By far, the best feature of the garden is the flowing grey hedges of Teucrium fruticans. Sweeping down from street level between the majestic trunks of Eucalyptus citriodora, the hedges provide privacy and screening without blocking views completely.

An exercise in space saving design, this successful garden proves size is irrelevant to impact; all it takes is a little imagination.
